Las Salinas romanas de Imón (Guadalajara)-The Salt flats of Imón (Guadalajara)

Salt is essential  for our lives, this  fact is known by Mankind since thousands of years. In the ancient world it was a precious good since it was used to preserve meat, fish and other food. There was a time on which the soldiers of Rome were paid with salt, that’s why the origin of the word salary. Jesus Christ said to his apostles ,VOS ESTIS SALT TERRAE, you are the salt of the Earth, that is giving an idea of the importance of salt in those times.

The are two main sources of salt, the salt obtained by evaporation of lakes ,seas or rivers, like the case on  we  are involved now, since the salt flats of Imon are fed by river Salado (Salty river); the other source of salt is gem salt or rocky salt which is extracted from mines of a mineral called Halite.

The importance of salt can be seen in the high tax it was charged on. In the ancient world many prisoners of war  were forced to work as slaves in the salt mines or in the salt flats, both activities were very hard, in the salt mines due to the fatigue and exhaustion when extracting the mineral and in the salt flats due to the blindness for exposure to the reflection of the sun on the salt.

The salt flats of Imon have been operating for more than 2000 years till they were closed in 2002, the way of producing salt was the same as 2000 years ago.
